JU celebrates Buddha Purnima with great enthusiasm

Jammu, May 16: The Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Jammu, Jammu in collaboration with Shiksha Sanskriti Uthan Nyas, J&K, Bharat- Tibet Sangh, Haloti Gompa Welfare Society, Kishtwar celebrated Buddha Purnima Prayer for the world peace on Monday, 16th May 2022. Vesaka Buddha Purnima, Buddha Jayanti is a Buddhist festival. It falls on the day of the Full Moon in May and commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Nirv?na), and death (Mahaparinirv?na) of Gautama Buddha.
The program schedule of the event starts with a welcome address by Prof. Shohab Inayat Malik, HOD Buddhist studies, University of Jammu,The distinguished speakers addressed the occasion, wherein Dr Ajay Kumar Singh, Dr Chhering, Tandup, Dr Pardeep goyal, and Dr Kuldeep Sharma. They talked about the important teaching of the Buddha i.e. Four Noble Truths, Eightfold path, Brahamvihara, etc.
They also said that lovingness, kindness, and friendliness are very significant for establishing peace and social harmony during this present scenario of the world.
Further, they focused on the liberal and rational approach of the Buddha towards the common man, women, and downtrodden of the then society which continued throughout the annals of Buddhism.
Dr Rajesh Sharma (Faculty department of Buddhist studies) conducted the entire proceedings of the function.
Earlier the function started with the lighting of the traditional lamp following which floral tributes were paid to Buddha amidst prayer in Pali by the students and scholars of the Department.
At the end of the function, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Vivek Sharma.
Prominent among others who were present included Dilawar Singh Manhas, Desh Raj, President HGWS, Kishtwar, Dr Ashwani Kumar and Students, Scholars of Deptt. of Buddhist Studies.
