Lack of attention

03/06/2023

The train accident in Odisha that left more than 70 people dead and 350 injured is a tragic reminder of the safety issues faced by India's railway system. Year after year, we see similar accidents occurring across the country, claiming hundreds of innocent lives. It is a fact that the Indian railways are the lifeline of our nation, but it is equally true that our railways' infrastructure and safety measures are far from perfect. It is high time that we acknowledge this issue and take appropriate measures to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. One of the major reasons for train accidents in India is the lack of modernization and upgradation of our railway infrastructure. Despite several budgetary allocations, the progress has been slow, and timely maintenance is frequently neglected. This has resulted in derailments, collisions, and other mishaps, causing loss of life and property.
Another major concern is the lack of use of technology in preventing accidents. The government has launched several initiatives to modernize and digitize the railways, but these efforts need to be reinforced on a large scale. The implementation of advanced track signaling systems, automatic train control, modern coaching stock, and improved communication channels could reduce the likelihood of accidents and help in managing support services for disaster management. Moreover, the lack of attention to safety regulations and railway operational processes is a significant factor leading to accidents. We need to develop a safety culture and instill safety procedures at all levels, among employees, passengers, and service providers. This includes proper training of employees in safety standards and carrying out regular inspections to ensure compliance. In conclusion, the government must acknowledge and address the shortcomings of our railways' infrastructure and safety measures. The focus should be on modernization, digitization, and the implementation of safety standards across the board, from the planning stage right through to post-accident assistance and relief. Let us not forget that every life lost in a railway accident is a precious one, and we must do everything in our power to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
