JAMMU, Jun 4: J&K National Conference has expressed its great resentment over the statement given by the Lt Governor that the successive governments have hijacked and rigged elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Party said that it was an insult to the people of the State who have always participated enthusiastically in the electoral process.
This was stated by Rattan Lal Gupta, Provincial President JKNC while addressing party workers meeting at village Dhanu in Bhalwal area of Nagrota Constituency.
The Provincial President said that the statement of Lt Governor was an attempt to malign the political parties and the people of J&K who have shown their commitment to democracy time and again. He said the statement of Lt Governor could be seen as undermining the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is an independent constitutional body responsible for conducting free and fair elections in the country.
Rattan Lal Gupta has accused the BJP Government at the Centre of delaying the due Assembly elections in order to maintain its hold in Jammu and Kashmir. He said BJP is scared of facing elections in J&K because they know they have no base there. That is why the Saffron Party is delaying election process.
The senior NC leader asserted that democracy cannot be imposed from outside but has to come from within. He emphasized that the people of J&K should be allowed to decide their own future through a democratic process.
Notably, the Assembly elections in J&K were last held in 2014, before the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories in August 2019. Since then, the Union Territory has been under President's Rule.
Earlier, Kuldeep Raj, senior NC leader who organized today's meeting, raised serious concern over scarcity of basic amenities like shortage of power, water and lack of healthcare facilities in the area. He said people have been forced to live a miserable life. The meeting was chaired by Sarpanch Sain Khan and was attended by Lambardar Swarn Singh, Bharat Singh, Mohan Lal, Rajinder Singh, Madan Lal, Nadeem, Shabir and others.
Rattan Lal said that general public is confronting number of problems. He said that people are decrying for power and water facilities and have been compelled to come on roads at many places across the region. He said that BJP government is running an authoritative dispensation in J&K with citizen rights under siege as common man is ignored on all fronts. He also asked the government to clear the liability of MGNREGA of the area which has crossed nearly Rs 2 crore.
