A journey, not an experience: Surabhi Dashputra

Surabhi Dashputra is celebrating the success of Judgementall Hai Kya by sipping on a hot cup of chai, enjoying the Mumbai monsoon before she takes off for home in the UK.
The vocalist has crooned the soulful track, Kis Raaste Hai Jaana, along with its composer Arjuna Harjai in the flick. She says, “The song was a journey rather than an experience. Arjuna believes in empowering artistes and gives them the freedom to experiment. The track has an organic and abstract element, which is a rarity these days.”
THE BACKSTORY
I was born in a middle-class working family in Jabalpur. My parents are ardent music lovers and my mom is a trained Indian classical vocalist. My dad ensured that I had access to the best of teachers since I was about six. Later, I was trained by Suresh Wadkar for 11 years, which refined my singing. I also hold an MPhil degree in Music from Mumbai University. Being one of the top 30 contestants in AR Rahman’s YouTube series ARRived and guided and judged by the stalwart himself was a great experience. Currently, I’m a global Indian settled in London. That gives me a wider audience of the massive Indian diaspora. I also collaborate with artistes in US and United Kingdom.
RELEASES IN THE PAST
I wrote the lyrics of O Soniye, and sang Atyachaari in Titoo MBA (2014). I also had a single Manzoor Nahi with Arjuna apart from being part of Vyakul Jiyara in Coke Studio season 3 among other releases. I’ve given vocals for background scores in Padmaavat and Lucknow Central, too.
ALSO WORKING ON
I have a few projects in the South Indian film industry and ad jingles lined up. My music academy (ASM Aesthetics of Sound & Music) keeps me busy, as I am passionate about training aspiring musicians. I recently worked as a lyricist on an original single composed by Arjuna and wrote as well as sang another original for a US-based composer.
MY FAVOURITE PLAYBACK VOCALISTS
From the current lot, Arjit Singh is extremely versatile and does justice to every composition he renders. Neeti Mohan is again a well-accomplished crooner, who has a signature style. Last but not least, Arjuna is someone who can make singing any difficult composition look effortless and soulful.
COMPOSERS I’D LIKE TO SING FOR
ARR, Vishal-Shekar, Vishal Bharadwaj and Pritam because they are all very experimental and trendsetters.
