COURT EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER RECENT LOSS OF 37 LIVES IN ASSAR ROAD ACCIDENT



DB directs Div Com Jammu, IG Traffic to disclose steps for preventing road accidents

JAMMU, Nov 24: A Division Bench of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court comprising Chief Justice N Kotishwar Singh and Justice MA Chowdhary while hearing a Public Interest Litigation pertain to unsafe road conditions on the Mughal Road and National Highway 44, particularly in the Doda, Batote, Kishtwar and Ramban District stretch, expresses concern over recent loss of 37 lives in Assar Road Accident and directed Divisonal Commissioner Jammu and IG Traffic J&K to disclose the steps or preventing road accident in Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Road.
DB after hearing Advocates S.S. Ahmed, Syed Asim Hashmi, Zulkarnain Choudhary, Rahul Raina and Adnan Mushtaq, observed that it has been highlighted that frequent accidents in these areas have resulted in the loss of many lives, which are preventable if appropriate preventive measures are put in place and n this regard, DB request the petitioners to suggest preventive measures for the issuance of appropriate directions to the concerned authorities. DB further said that the State respondents also should come up with viable solutions, inasmuch as, ensuring road safety falls within the primary responsibility of the State authorities.
DB directed the Inspector General of Police (Traffic), Jammu, respondent shall submit an account of the measures taken and also required to be taken to prevent these recurring accidents by the next date and also directed the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, shall also submit his report regarding the conditions of the Highway/National Highways in the aforesaid sectors and also offer his own inputs for prevention of accidents.
