India’s Firm Stance against Terrorism and Pakistan

16/05/2025

India's policy on terrorism and its relations with Pakistan have been shaped by decades of cross-border violence, proxy wars, and unrelenting hostility. Recent statements by Indian policymakers and leaders underscore a clear and uncompromising stance: any attack on Indian soil will be considered an act of war. This declaration is not merely rhetorical but reflects a growing national consensus that India will no longer tolerate terrorism as a tool of statecraft by its western neighbor. The Indian government has made it unequivocally clear that any dialogue with Pakistan will be strictly bilateral and limited to the issue of terrorism. This is a departure from the past, where talks often meandered into broader issues without addressing the core problem of cross-border terrorism. India's position is now focused and unyielding: Pakistan must demonstrate "credible and irrevocable" action against terrorism before any meaningful engagement can occur. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty until such action is taken is a testament to India's determination to use all available leverage to hold Pakistan accountable.
The issue of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) remains a critical point of contention. India's stance is unambiguous: the only matter left to discuss regarding Kashmir is the vacation of illegally occupied PoK. This position reinforces India's commitment to its territorial integrity and sends a strong message to Pakistan and the international community that India will not compromise on its sovereignty. The question of nuclear weapons in Pakistan's possession adds another layer of complexity to the region's security dynamics. The international community has long expressed concerns about the safety and security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, given the country's history of political instability and its alleged ties to non-state actors. India, while maintaining its own nuclear deterrent, has consistently advocated for responsible nuclear behavior. The specter of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorist organizations is a grave threat not just to India but to global peace and security.
India's recent actions, such as Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam attack, demonstrate its resolve to hold perpetrators of terrorism accountable. The UN Security Council's acknowledgment of the need for accountability further validates India's position. However, India's approach has been marked by restraint and precision, targeting only those responsible for acts of terrorism while avoiding escalation into full-scale conflict. The bilateral nature of India's dealings with Pakistan is a reflection of the national consensus that has existed for years. There is "absolutely no change" in this consensus, and India remains committed to addressing its concerns with Pakistan directly, without external mediation. This approach underscores India's confidence in its ability to manage its own affairs and its refusal to allow third parties to dictate its foreign policy.
India's policy against terrorism and its dealings with Pakistan are rooted in a combination of resolve and restraint. The message is clear: India will not hesitate to defend itself against any act of aggression, but it will do so within the framework of international law and bilateral engagement. The onus now lies on Pakistan to take credible and irreversible steps to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism on its soil. Until then, India's stance will remain firm, principled, and unwavering. The world must recognize that India's fight against terrorism is not just a regional issue but a global one. The stability of South Asia and the safety of the international community depend on Pakistan's willingness to act decisively against terrorism. India's policy is a call for accountability, a demand for justice, and a commitment to peace through strength.
