Militancy will not end until relations with our neighbour improve: Farooq

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Veteran politician and National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah today said that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir will persist until relations between India and Pakistan see meaningful improv-ement.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah rejected claims that militancy in Kashmir has been eradicated.
"The militancy has neither ended, nor will it end. Those who believe it will end, I challenge them that militancy will not end until relations with our neighbour improve," he said.
Abdullah's comments come amid repeated assertions by the Union government that the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has vastly improved in recent years.
Responding to a query regarding the ongoing Kulgam encounter, which has been continuing for the last four days, Abdullah questioned the narrative of normalcy. "How can you say militancy has ended when encounters are still taking place?" he remarked.
NC president also expressed deep sorrow over the demise of veteran Jharkhand leader and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to Shibu Soren's family, especially to his son Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
"I am with him and all my people in this moment of grief," he added.
He expressed hope that Hemant Soren would continue his father's legacy and work towards the upliftment of the poor in Jharkhand.
"We hope that the step his father took to take the state forward, he will continue to do that work and will be able to work for the poor people of Jharkhand," Abdullah said.
Meanwhile, Farooq Abdullah reiterated the party's firm opposition to the "unilateral and unconstitutional actions" taken on August 5, 2019, stating that such steps continue to remain unacceptable to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and the party.
He affirmed that the J&K National Conference will continue its peaceful, democratic and constitutional struggle for the restoration of J&K's democratic and constitutional rights.
A party statement said that Abdullah made these remarks during a meeting with a number of individual and public delegations, who called on him at the party headquarters in Srinagar.
