Nothing bad or good will happen: Omar on Art 370 abrogation anniversary

05/08/2025

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: With rumour mills in Kashmir abuzz on the eve of the sixth anniversary of Article 370 abrogation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister today said that "nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either tomorrow."
There has been speculation on social media that statehood may be restored to the whole of Jammu and Kashmir or to the Jammu region alone on the anniversary of special status scrapping tomorrow.
The meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah with President Droupadi Murmu has set chatter of some major announcement tomorrow.
Omar Abdullah took to social media and said nothing will happen tomorrow.
“I've heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow - fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either," Omar said.
“I'm still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow. And no, I haven't had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi. This is just a gut feeling. Let's see this time tomorrow."
Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti said hushed whispers suggest something drastic yet again is in the offing.
"Exactly six years ago ominous clouds of uncertainty hung over Kashmir on 4th August 2019. Since a week now hushed whispers suggest something drastic yet again is in the offing. Insinuations dressed in metaphors & dark humour. 'Dapaan' (it is being said) at the beginning of every sentence," she said.
Lt General (retired) K J S Dhillon, who was General Officer Commanding of Srinagar based Chinar Corps when J&K Special status was scrapped, said Centre should not rush into any hasty decision
"There is a lot of speculation about what may be announced tomorrow (5th Aug). The peace in Kashmir has come about at a great cost of human lives of security forces personnel and innocent civilians. It's fragile still as was evident from the Pahalgam terror attack. For the sake of those who laid down their lives in this journey of peace as also those whose lives are going to be impacted by any decision on it, we should not rush into any hasty decision. As consolidation phase for restoration of peace is going on . . . - Let the whole thing settle down. - Let's not jump the gun," he said on X.
Former Director General of J&K Police, Shesh Paul Vaid said the Modi Govt is known for playing its cards close to the chest which means no one really knows what's coming,
"Modi Govt planning something on Aug 5? Maybe. Maybe not. The Modi Govt is known for playing its cards close to the chest which means no one really knows what's coming, if at all something happens. Let's not fall for rumors or panic-driven forwards. Trust only official sources. Stay calm, stay alert..." Vaid said on X.
Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said that August 5 (2019) "our voice, our rights, our Constitution was taken without our consent."
"August 4, 2019 we were silenced. August 5 our voice, our rights, our Constitution taken without our consent. What was ours by birth and by belonging was stripped away overnight. Not a whisper of warning. Not a shred of justice. Today, we remember. We resist," she said.
