SRINAGAR, Nov 11: The Budgam Assembly constituency in Jammu and kashmir recorded a voter turnout of 49.89 pc in the bypolls held on Tuesday, officials said.
The turnout marked a slight dip compared to 52.27 pc recorded in last year's Assembly elections. In the 2014 Assembly polls, Budgam had witnessed a much higher participation, with 66.07% of voters exercising their franchise.
District Election Officer (DEO), Budgam, Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat said everything went smoothly in the bypoll.
The bypoll was necessitated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had won both Budgam and Ganderbal seats in last year's Assembly elections, vacated Budgam, choosing to retain Ganderbal.
The fate of 17 candidates was sealed in the Budgam bypolls, including seven independents. The contest, however, is largely seen as a direct face-off between the National Conference's Aga Syed Mahmood and the PDP's Aga Muntazir.
Other prominent contenders included BJP's Aga Syed Mohsin, Awami Ittehad Party's Nazir Ahmad Khan, Aam Aadmi Party's Deeba Khan, and Independent candidate Muntazir Mohiuddin.
Officials said polling remained peaceful throughout the day, with voters turning out steadily across most polling stations despite the chilly weather.
Counting of votes is scheduled to take place on Friday.
