High Court disposes of PIL seeking 24×7 DD Dogri Channel; petitioner granted liberty to approach authorities

JAMMU, Nov 27: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at Jammu on Tuesday disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking directions to the Union of India for launching and telecasting a 24×7 Doordarshan Duggar/Dogri channel across the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
The PIL, WP(C) PIL No. 07/2024, was filed by Jayesh Kumar, a domicile of J&K, requesting the establishment of a regional subsidiary Doordarshan studio in both Union Territories to ensure uninterrupted Dogri-language broadcasting similar to DD Kashmir, DD Punjabi, DD Odia and DD Bangla.
The petitioner was represented by Mr. Aseem Kumar Sawhney, Senior Advocate (Amicus Curiae), assisted by Ms. Tehseema Bukhari, Mr. Piyush Behal and Mr. Himanshu Beotra, Advocates vice Mr. Pranav Khajuria, Advocate. For the respondents, Mr. Vishal Sharma, DSGI, appeared along with Mr. Eishaan Dadhichi, CGSC.
After hearing both sides at length, the Division Bench comprising the Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal recorded that the parties reached consensus in light of the Supreme Court order dated October 14, 2024 in SLP(C) No. 43504/2024 (Sindhi Sangat v. Union of India). It was agreed that the petition need not be pursued further.
The Court accordingly terminated the proceedings without entering into the merits, while granting the petitioner liberty to approach the competent authorities to raise concerns regarding the Dogri channel.
"Accordingly, the petition is disposed of, in the above terms, with the liberty prayed for," the order states.
