JAMMU, Apr 15: BJP national general secretary and party in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Tarun Chugh on Tuesday asked the National Conference to clarify its stand on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures.
Addressing the media, Chugh said National Conference leader Omar Abdullah should clearly state whether his party supports or opposes the legislation, instead of maintaining what he termed an ambiguous position.
He said the law represents a major step towards political empowerment of women and alleged that certain political parties were treating the issue as a matter of political convenience.
Chugh also criticised the past policies of the National Conference, alleging that women's rights in Jammu and Kashmir were restricted for decades under earlier legal provisions.
Referring to the 2004 "Daughters' Bill", he claimed that such measures reflected a regressive approach towards women's rights.
Highlighting initiatives of the Centre, Chugh said steps have been taken in recent years to promote women's empowerment and ensure greater participation in governance.
He urged the National Conference leadership to take a clear position on the legislation, stating that women across the country expect unequivocal support for measures aimed at their empowerment.
