new delhi, may 14: India’s wholesale price inflation index (WPI) jumped to 8.30 per cent in April, from 3.88 per cent in March, primarily due to increase in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, basic metals, other manufacturing and non-food articles.
According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, the price index for power and fuel category increased by 18.22 per cent to 181.7 in April 2026 from 153.7 in March 2026, majorly due to higher prices of mineral oils.
The data shows that the price index of mineral oils increased by 29.37 per cent in April 2026 compared to March 2026. While, the price of electricity decreased to 2.53 per cent in April 2026 compared to March 2026.
Furthermore, the price index for manufactured products increased by 1.40 per cent to 151.6 in April 2026 from 149.5 in March 2026.
WPI food index increased from 192.8 in March 2026 to 195.1 in April 2026. The rate of inflation YoY based on WPI Food Index increased from 1.85 per cent in March 2026 to 2.31 per cent in April 2026. Meanwhile, the price of crude petroleum & natural gas rose to 16.42 per cent, food articles 1.41 per cent and minerals increase to 0.91 per cent in April 2026 compared to March 2026. Nonetheless, certain food items still had negative inflation. Potato inflation was 30.04 per cent, while onion inflation stayed negative at 26.45 per cent. Additionally, pulses inflation remained negative at 4.03 per cent.
It is worth noting that the extended closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the West Asia crisis has resulted in rising crude oil prices, which are reflected in the WPI inflation data. The price of a barrel of Brent crude is currently about $106.69. On March 7, 2026, the government raised domestic LPG rates by Rs 60 per 14.2-kg cylinder, while maintaining consumer retail fuel pricing.
In Delhi, the cost of a household LPG cylinder increased from approximately Rs 853 to Rs 913 after the rise.
