Jammu, May 25: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta on Sunday accused the BJP of promoting corruption and patronage networks during its rule in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that the present government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has restored transparency and accountability in governance.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta alleged that the BJP leadership was frustrated over what he described as the dismantling of corrupt practices under the elected government. He claimed that expenditure under the present administration was subject to legislative oversight and public accountability, unlike during the period of direct rule in the Union Territory.
Gupta further alleged that corruption channels and networks of patronage that existed during the BJP's tenure had been curtailed under the current dispensation.
Taking aim at the BJP leadership in Jammu and Kashmir, he also alleged that land-related irregularities, illegal mining activities and recruitment-related issues had flourished during the party's tenure.
The NC leader also questioned the visibility of the Leader of Opposition and alleged that he had remained absent from his Padder constituency after the elections. Gupta said the BJP should respond to allegations related to governance and administrative functioning during its tenure before criticising the present government.
There was no immediate response available from the BJP on the allegations.
