Considerable scope to make further progress in trade between India, Lao PDR: President Murmu

NEW DELHI, Jun 3: Pres-ident Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said there is considerable scope for making further progress in trade and investment between India and Lao PDR.
During his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Lao PDR Thongsavan Phomvihane, who had called on the president at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Murmu said India and Lao PDR share close civilisational ties, reflected in the two countries' common heritage of Buddhism and the Ramayan.
She said bilateral trade between India and Lao PDR has grown, but there remains considerable scope to make further progress together in both trade and investment.
Murmu said India would be happy to expand cooperation with Lao PDR in areas, such as information and communication technology (ICT), health, medicine, agriculture, irrigation, manufacturing, renewable energy and electricity.
"We are also keen to share our experiences in the fields of innovation and the knowledge-based economy," she said.
Welcoming Phomvihane on his first visit to India, the president said she is happy to note that the development partnership between the two countries has become even stronger and is aligned with the aspirations of the youth of Lao and the country's socio-economic development needs.
The leaders agreed that close cooperation between India and Lao PDR can bring immense benefits to the people of both countries, according to a statement issued by the president's office.
Murmu said this year, "we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries", which is a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship.
She said in October 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lao PDR to participate in the ASEAN-related summits, during which several agreements were concluded, giving fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation.
