University of Jammu begins national workshop on Computational Sanskrit

JAMMU, Jul 17: The Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu, on Friday inaugurated a seven-day national workshop on "Computational Sanskrit - Basic Level" to introduce participants to the integration of Sanskrit with computational technologies and artificial intelligence.
The online workshop, being held from July 17 to 24, is aimed at equipping research scholars, students and teachers with contemporary knowledge and practical skills in the emerging field of Computational Sanskrit. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai, who presided over the inaugural session as chief guest, said Computational Sanskrit has an important role in showcasing India's knowledge tradition at the global level. He urged participants to make the best use of the learning opportunity.
Director, Central Sanskrit University, Kot Bhalwal, Prof. Satish Kapoor attended as the guest of honour, while Prof. Subhash Chandra of the University of Delhi delivered the keynote address.
Prof. Chandra discussed the fundamentals of Computational Sanskrit, its scientific structure and its growing relevance in Natural Language Processing (NLP), besides outlining future research prospects in the field. Prof. Kapoor emphasised the need to preserve and promote Sanskrit through modern technological platforms, saying computational tools are essential to making the language more accessible in the digital age.
Earlier, Head of the Department of Sanskrit and workshop convener Prof. Ram Bahadur Shukla welcomed the participants and highlighted the workshop's objectives and academic significance.
The second academic session featured a lecture by Prof. Pavnesh Abrol of the Department of Computer Science and IT, University of Jammu, on the role of Artificial Intelligence in strengthening the Indian Knowledge System through Computational Sanskrit.
In the afternoon session, Prof. Subhash Chandra delivered a lecture on research trends and future opportunities in Sanskrit Computational Linguistics, highlighting emerging areas of research and the development of Sanskrit-based digital resources.
