Natrang stages Chekhov-inspired play ‘Reed-Rahit’

JAMMU, Jul 26: Natrang on Sunday staged "Reed-Rahit", a play based on Russian writer Anton Chekhov's "Nincompoop", at its Studio Theatre here as part of its weekly Sunday Theatre Series.
Adapted in Hindi by Satyendra Sharat and directed by Neeraj Kant, the play highlights the importance of self-respect, dignity of labour and the courage to stand up against exploitation. The story revolves around a landlord and Julia, a tutor to his children who also works as domestic help and has not received her salary for two months.
While settling her dues, the landlord deliberately makes a series of arbitrary deductions and tells Julia that she is entitled to only Rs. 1,100 against the promised amount of Rs. 8,000. Despite the deductions, Julia meekly accepts the reduced payment without protesting.
Her submissive response prompts the landlord to reveal that the exercise was intended to teach her a lesson in asserting her rights. He tells her that remaining silent in the face of injustice allows others to take advantage and stresses the need to speak up against exploitation.
At the end, the landlord pays Julia the full amount of Rs. 8,000, bringing his experiment to a close and reinforcing the play's message of self-respect and standing up for one's legitimate rights.
Natrang actors Kushal Bhat, Vrinda Gujral and Vishal Sharma performed in the play.
The lighting was handled by Neeraj Kant, while Kushal Bhat operated the music. Priyal Ashok Gupta presented the show before the audience.
