Congress to intensify statehood movement if promise not fulfilled: Bhalla

JAMMU, Jul 27: The Congress on Sunday said it would intensify its agitation for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir if the Centre failed to fulfil its commitment, while also attacking the BJP-led government over issues ranging from student protests to unemployment.
The remarks were made at a party meeting in Reasi attended by AICC Secretary and J&K co-incharge Divya Maderna, JKPCC Working President Raman Bhalla and other senior leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Maderna alleged that excessive force, including pellet guns, was used against students during recent protests at Jantar Mantar and demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah explain the police action. She said the Congress would continue to raise issues concerning students and hold the Centre accountable over alleged paper leak cases.
She praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for supporting students protesting against examination irregularities and alleged that the Centre had failed to address their concerns. Bhalla accused the BJP-led government of failing to fulfil its promises to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly on the restoration of statehood and employment generation.
He said the Congress would intensify its movement if statehood was not restored at the earliest and criticised BJP MPs and MLAs from Jammu, alleging that they had failed to effectively raise public issues. Bhalla also sought a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the alleged irregularities relating to donations to the Ram Temple trust and demanded accountability from those responsible.
