JU organises workshop on pre-monsoon preparedness, disaster risk reduction

JAMMU, Aug 10: The Department of Environmental Sciences and Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU), University of Jammu, in collaboration with the J&K Science, Technology and Innovation Council (JKSTIC), Department of Science and Technology, J&K, organised a one-day workshop on 'Pre-Monsoon Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction in Jammu'.
The workshop focused on creating awareness about monsoon-related hazards, disaster preparedness, risk reduction, early warning systems and scientific and community-based approaches to building a disaster-resilient Jammu.
Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Jammu, was the chief guest. He stressed the need for proactive preparedness and scientific understanding of environmental and disaster risks.
Prof Sharma said disaster management should focus not only on post-disaster response but also on anticipatory planning, preparedness and resilience building.
He emphasised strengthening institutional capacity, scientific awareness and community participation to reduce disaster risks.
Sh Mohammad Aslam, IPS, Commandant, SDRF, 2nd Battalion, Jammu, was the guest of honour. Sharing his experience in disaster response and management, he highlighted the importance of timely response, preparedness, institutional coordination and community awareness in reducing the impact of disasters.
The workshop was funded by JKSTIC. Ms Shruti Khanna, Deputy Director, JKSTIC, appreciated the initiative and said bringing experts, academicians, students and stakeholders together provided an important platform to deliberate on disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
She assured continued financial and institutional support for similar initiatives addressing emerging environmental and disaster-related challenges.
Earlier, Prof Deepika Slathia, Head of the Department, welcomed the participants and highlighted Jammu's vulnerability to intense rainfall, flash floods, urban flooding, landslides and other climate-related hazards. She stressed the importance of pre-monsoon preparedness and proactive planning to minimise risks and strengthen community resilience.
The resource persons included Dr Riyaz Ahmad Mir, Scientist In-Charge, Western Himalayan Regional Centre, NIH, Jammu; Dr Yudhbir Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Geology, University of Jammu; and Dr Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu.
The technical sessions covered hydrological hazards, geological vulnerabilities, environmental risks, monsoon-related challenges and scientific approaches to disaster risk reduction.
