Opposition protest sparks Parliament logjam, both Houses adjourned amid demands for HM Shah’s statement

NEW DELHI, Aug 10: Opposition MPs, led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest within the Parliament premises on Monday, intensifying the confrontation with the government and disrupting proceedings in both Houses.
The protest centred on the Opposition's demand for a statement from union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar on July 20, as well as demands for a discussion on alleged irregularities and theft linked to donations made to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
The continuing protest resulted in repeated disruptions, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being adjourned till noon as the Opposition pressed for its demands.
Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition MPs raised slogans inside the Parliament complex, demanding that the government respond to allegations concerning the handling of the student protests. The Opposition has maintained that the Home Minister should make a formal statement in Parliament on the police action and explain the government's position on the treatment of protesting students.
The July 20 incident had already become a major flashpoint between the government and the Opposition during the Monsoon Session. Opposition parties have accused the government of suppressing student voices, while demanding accountability for the police action during the protests at Jantar Mantar.
The Opposition also stepped up its demand for a discussion on alleged irregularities in donations received for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. MPs raised slogans over the issue and sought an opportunity to raise the matter on the floor of the House.
Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who has been leading the Opposition's efforts in the Upper House, has also maintained pressure on the government over issues that the Opposition says require parliamentary scrutiny.
The latest protest came against the backdrop of a continuing standoff between the government and Opposition during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Several sittings of both Houses have been disrupted in recent weeks over issues including the NEET-UG controversy, student protests and other demands raised by Opposition parties.
Senior Opposition leaders have made it clear that they would continue to press the government until their demands are addressed, signalling that the deadlock could persist and normal parliamentary business could face further disruptions.
The government, meanwhile, has continued with legislative and other listed business amid the protests. With the Opposition refusing to relent on its demands, Monday's developments further deepened the political confrontation in Parliament and raised the possibility of continued disruptions in the remaining days of the session.
