JNEG marks 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour, pays tribute to freedom fighters, armed forces

JAMMU, Aug 16: The Jammu Newspapers Editors Guild (JNEG) celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and solemn remembrance at Hotel Lemon Tree here, reaffirming its commitment to responsible journalism, national unity and public service.
The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem. Editors and represen-tatives of leading newspapers participated in the ceremony and paid homage to freedom fighters and national heroes whose sacrifices secured India's independence.

Sawhney, Chief Patron, Journey Line; Vishal Chopra, Editor-in-Chief, Jammu Metro and Chief Spokesperson of JNEG; Ram Dubey, Editor, Kattu Satya; Iqbal Qazmi, Editor, Daily Udaan; Vinod Kapoor, Editor, Truly Times; Sanjeev Chadha, Editor, Zinda Sach; Abhishek Kapoor, Editor-in-Chief, Daily Reality Speaks; Gurmeet Dutta; among others, attended the programme.
The Guild observed the occasion in a restrained manner in view of the recent Kishtwar cloudburst tragedy. Members expressed solidarity with the affected families and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Addressing the gathering, JNEG President Advocate A.K. Sawhney paid homage to the victims of the Kishtwar tragedy and remembered those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack. He also saluted the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces and security personnel in the fight against terrorism.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, Sawhney said the operation demonstrated India's resolve and capability to respond firmly to terrorism and protect its citizens. He said the Indian Armed Forces had carried out precision strikes against terrorist infrastructure following the Pahalgam attack, reflecting the country's determination to defend its sovereignty and security.
Sawhney said Independence Day was an occasion not only to celebrate freedom but also to remember with gratitude the freedom fighters, soldiers and citizens who had sacrificed their lives for the unity, integrity and progress of the nation.
Speaking on the occasion, Sawhney also appealed to the J&K Government to review and improve its advertisement policy and enhance advertisement rates for newspapers. He urged the authorities to recognise newly established newspapers serving different regions and ensure that they are treated fairly without discrimination.
He stressed the need to resolve the issue of dual recognition and establish a uniform advertisement policy across the Union Territory, saying a transparent and equitable policy was essential for the healthy growth of the newspaper industry and its continued contribution to public service.
JNEG Chairman Raj Daluja said the Guild remained united on issues of national interest and was committed to responsible and credible journalism. He stressed that the media had an important role in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting social harmony and keeping citizens informed.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in terror attacks and natural disasters.
As part of the Independence Day observance, a plantation drive was also organised at the hotel premises. Guild members and others participated in the initiative, linking the celebration of freedom with environmental responsibility and the larger national goal of sustainable development.
JNEG Chief Spokesperson Vishal Chopra proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to all the members and participants for joining the Independence Day programme.
The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, reflecting the patriotic spirit and collective commitment of JNEG members to the nation.
The Guild members renewed their pledge to uphold the Tricolour, strengthen national unity and integrity, support the armed forces and contribute through responsible journalism towards building a peaceful, secure and progressive India.
