JU begins storm water channel project, foundation stone laid by JMC Commissioner

Jammu, Aug 17: The University of Jammu on Monday took another step towards strengthening sustainable campus infrastructure with the commencement of a project for sustainable development of a storm water channel. Jammu Munic-ipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav, IAS, laid the foundation stone of the project in the presence of University of Jammu Vice-Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, Dean Research Studies Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Planning and Develo-pment Prof Sangita Gupta, Dean Academic Affairs Prof J.P. Singh Joorel, besides Rectors, Directors, Heads of Departments, Registrar and other senior officers. The project envisages restoration and upgradation of the nallah from the University Guest House to the area behind the Cricket Ground under Phase-I. It is being executed through the Urban Environmental Engine-ering Department (UEED), Sewerage and Drainage Circle, Jammu.
The initiative is aimed at streamlining storm water flow and strengthening the drainage system, particularly around the adjoining university residential quarters.
It will also complement the University's broader sustainability initiatives, including the proposed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Yadav directed the concerned officials to maintain quality during execution and ensure close coordination with the University authorities.
He also stressed the need for regular maintenance of the channel and directed that suitable provisions be made at appropriate points to facilitate periodic cleaning and prevent choking.
Prof Umesh Rai thanked Dr Yadav and the JMC team for taking the project forward. He said the initiative would help address drainage concerns around the residential quarters while complementing the University's plans for effective wastewater management through the proposed STP.
Taking the sustainability initiative further, Prof Rai proposed exploring the possibility of installing solar panels along the approximately 320-metre-long and 3.6-metre-wide stretch of the channel.
