SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Chhari Mubarak, the saffron-robed holy mace of Lord Shiva, left for Pahalgam on Saturday, marking the start of the main religious rituals of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage.
The holy mace was taken to Pahalgam from its abode at the Dashnami Akhara building here for various rituals linked to the annual pilgrimage.
Amid chants of Vedic hymns, Mahant Deependra Giri, custodian of the Chhari Mubarak, led a group of sadhus in performing puja early on Saturday before embarking on the journey towards the Holy Cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas.
The Amarnath yatra was suspended for the year on August 9 due to damage to the track and adverse weather conditions. The rituals associated with the pilgrimage, however, continue.
The holy mace is being taken to the cave shrine for 'Pujan' and 'Darshan' on the auspicious occasion of 'Shravan Purnima' on August 28, Giri said.
He said the holy mace will halt at Pahalgam on Saturday and Sunday, Chandanwari on August 24, Sheshnag on August 25 and Panchtarani on August 26 and 27.
More than 4.80 lakh pilgrims have undertaken the yatra this year, which began on July 3.
The pilgrimage will conclude on August 28 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
