FDA conducts 140 inspections, lifts 55 food samples

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Jammu and Kashmir, conducted 140 inspections and lifted 55 food samples for testing of quality and safety parameters across various districts of the Union Territory, officials said.
The samples collected during the enforcement drive included milk and milk products, edible oils, spices and other food commodities.
The FDA also issued 17 improvement notices to food business operators under Section 32 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, while 11 cases were compounded under Section 69 of the Act, involving a total penalty of Rs 11,000.
During the exercise, 97 food labels were scrutinised for compliance with prescribed labelling requirements. Two labels were found non-compliant with applicable provisions, while one food business registration was cancelled in Reasi district for violation of provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The enforcement drive covered food business establishments, e-commerce establishments dealing in food items, milk and milk products, edible oils, spices and imported food items.
Food supplied through the Public Distribution System (PDS), Mid-Day Meal (MDM) and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) channels was also covered during the exercise.
The activities were carried out in Jammu, Doda, Kathua, Samba, Reasi, Udhampur, Srinagar, Anantnag, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Budgam districts.
The concerned Designated Officers and Food Safety Officers have been directed to continue inspections, sampling, label scrutiny and enforcement activities and take action against violations in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act and regulations framed thereunder.
The FDA also urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of unsafe, adulterated or sub-standard food through the toll-free helpline 104 or by email at cfsjandk.fnd@jk.gov.in.
