PM Modi arrives in Tashkent for SCO Summit, to push vision of terror-free region

NEW DELHI/TASHKENT, Aug 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent on Saturday on the first leg of his two-nation visit to Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, saying India will work with fellow members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to advance the vision of a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism.
Modi, who was received at the airport by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is visiting Uzbekistan from August 29-30 before travelling to Bishkek to attend the 26th SCO Summit from August 30 to September 1.
In his departure statement, Modi said India, an active and constructive member of the SCO since 2017, would continue to promote its vision anchored in "Security, Connectivity and Opportunity".
"I look forward to advancing India's vision for the region, anchored in Security, Connectivity and Opportunity, and to working with fellow members for a region free from the scourge of terrorism, separatism and extremism," he said.
He said these challenges continued to threaten peace and stability in the neighbo-urhood and beyond.
Modi said his visit would contribute to the shared pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity and strengthen India's strategic partnerships in Central Asia while deepening the country's civilisational connect with the region.
During his stay in Uzbekistan, Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with President Mirziyoyev to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
The two leaders are expected to review cooperation in trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties and discuss the future roadmap for the strategic partnership.
Modi said India-Uzbekistan relations had witnessed significant progress in recent years and expressed his intention to further strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy.
He also said the two countries would work towards advancing their shared visions of "Viksit Bharat" and "Yangi Uzbekistan".
As part of his visit, Modi will pay tributes at the Shastri Memorial and visit the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, highlighting the cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Uzbekistan.
From Tashkent, Modi will travel to Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov to participate in the 26th SCO Summit, which marks 25 years of the organisation.
At the SCO summit, Modi is expected to highlight India's priorities of security, connectivity and opportunity. He will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of SCO member states on the sidelines of the summit.
During his Kyrgyzstan visit, Modi will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, which showcases the cultural heritage of Central Asia.
The visit is Modi's fourth to Uzbekistan and is aimed at further strengthening India's strategic engagement with the Central Asian region.
