University of Jammu holds panel discussion on human rights violations, governance crisis in POJK

JAMMU, Sep 2: The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu, in collaboration with the POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti, organised a panel discussion on "Human Rights Violations and Deepening Govern-ance Crisis in Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK)".
The discussion brought together academicians, research scholars, students, civil society members and representatives of the POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti to deliberate on the historical, political, administrative and human rights dimensions of the situation in POJK.
Dr Shreeya Bakshi, Assistant Professor, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, spoke on the historical developments associated with POJK and placed the contemporary situation in its broader historical context.
Dr Deepak Kapoor, President, POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti, discussed the history of Jammu and Kashmir, the background of POJK and its political and administrative framework.
He also spoke about the circumstances surrounding the division of the erstwhile state.
Preety Choudhary, member of the POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti, focused on human rights concerns in POJK and highlighted the experiences and challenges faced by people living in the region.
Damanjeet Singh, also a member of the Samiti, shared a personal and intergenerational perspective on displacement, referring to accounts narrated by his grandparents and the continuing emotional and cultural connection with their ancestral homeland.
Earlier, Prof Suman Jamwal, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jammu, in her welcome address, emphasised the importance of academic discussions on issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir and the role of universities in facilitating informed discourse on historically and strategically significant regional issues.
The presidential address was delivered by Dr Mohd Monir Alam, Senior Assistant Professor, DSRS, who underlined the importance of examining the POJK issue through an interdisciplinary academic perspective, taking into account its historical background, contemporary developments and human experiences.
The discussion also witnessed active participation from students, research scholars, faculty members and civil society representatives, who interacted with the panellists on various aspects of the subject.
