Stop JDA auction of 578-C lands, protect farmers’ Rights: Jat Sabha’s appeal to Omar Abdullah

Jammu, Sep 8: The J&K Jat Sabha has sounded a strong warning against the proposed auction of land by JDA covered under Cabinet Order No. 578-C of 1954 and 371 of 1971 Rule 16 of J&K Agrarian Reforms Act, saying the move threatens the interests of farmers, local allotees, refugee families and genuine tillers of the soil. The Sabha has appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene immediately and stop any action that could adversely affect genuine landholders.
J&K Jat Sabha President Manjit Singh said Girdauri of 1971 and land under Rule 16 of Order no 371 of 1971 was meant to safeguard the interests of farmers, local allotees & refugee communities and was part of the larger land-reform framework aimed at providing land to those who actually tilled it.
He said auction by JDA of land allotted under 578- C of Kasturi Lal of Channi Rama has unleashed the terror among local allotees and farmers and people around VC JDA are hand in gloves for their pity interests.
He said the present auction by JDA of land aloted under 578- C Kasturi Lal of Channi Rama has created widespread apprehension among farmers and refugee families who fear that land allotted to them under the historic order could now be subjected to auction.
"The land allotted under 578-C cannot be treated as ordinary government land without examining the rights of the people to whom it was allotted. The government must first protect the interests of genuine farmers and landholders," Manjit Singh said.
He said the intervention of the courts had given affected people an opportunity to present their case before the authorities. "Had the courts not intervened, the affected landholders would have had little recourse.
The authorities must respect the directions of the courts and provide a proper hearing as the main prayer of the land owner is to verify the land records from revenue department, but blue eyes people in JDA refusing to do so," he said.
