Ladakh LG Saxena gets additional charge of J&K during LG Sinha’s leave

NEW DELHI/LEH, Sep 8: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena was on Tuesday given additional charge of Jammu and Kashmir during the absence on leave of incumbent LG Manoj Sinha, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.
"The President of India is pleased to appoint Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lt. Governor of Ladakh to discharge the functions of the Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, in addition to his own duties," the communique said.
Sinha, who took charge as Jammu and Kashmir LG in August 2020, is currently in the United States and addressed the IIT (BHU) Global Alumni Meet in Chicago on Monday, officials said.
Saxena's additional assignment comes ahead of the swearing-in of Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati as the new Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11 am at the Convention Centre in Srinagar.
Justice Bhati, a judge of the Rajasthan High Court, was appointed Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court by President Droupadi Murmu on September 5. He will succeed Justice Sanjeev Kumar, who has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since June 2.
Saxena will administer the oath to Justice Bhati, marking the first occasion since Ladakh became a Union Territory in August 2019 that its Lieutenant Governor will administer the oath to the Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Bhati's appointment on August 31.
Meanwhile, the regulation providing for a permanent bench of the J&K and Ladakh High Court in Ladakh came into effect on September 5. The Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026, promulgated by the President on August 27, provides for a dedicated bench of the High Court to sit in Ladakh.
