BJP betrayed shopkeepers of Satwari, Nai Basti: Gupta

JAMMU, Sep 11: Senior Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader and Provincial President Jammu Rattan Lal Gupta on Thursday condemned the demolition of shops belonging to shopkeepers of Satwari and Nai Basti, alleging that the BJP had failed to honour its commitments regarding their rehabilitation and compensation. Gupta said the BJP had assured the affected shopkeepers of rehabilitation and compensation, but the assurances and orders issued in their favour had not been implemented.
He said the demolition had caused immense hardship to families dependent on the shops for their livelihood and demanded immediate steps for rehabilitation of the affected shopkeepers and payment of legitimate compensation.
Gupta also criticised the BJP's "Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan", describing it as a political exercise aimed at publicity rather than addressing genuine public grievances. He said public service required standing with people during difficult times and fulfilling commitments made to them.
Referring to the issue of restoration of statehood, Gupta said commitments had been made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, outside Parliament and before the Supreme Court, but statehood had not been restored so far.
He urged the BJP to stop what he termed "nautanki and frame-baazi" and instead fulfil its commitments to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the affected shopkeepers of Satwari and Nai Basti.
