GCW Gandhinagar organises lectures on mushroom cultivation

JAMMU, Sep 11: The Department of Botany, PSPS Government College for Women, Gandhinagar, Jammu, organised two lectures on mushroom cultivation under a skill course on Friday in collaboration with the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Mushrooms, SKUAST-Jammu.
The programme was held under the patronage of Principal Prof (Dr) Kulvinder Kour and supervision of Prof Shivani Sharma, Head, Depart-ment of Botany.
The programme aimed to acquaint students with the scientific, nutritional, medicinal and entrepreneurial aspects of mushroom cultivation and encourage them to explore it as an avenue for self-employment and entrepreneurship.
Dr Sachin Gupta, Incharge, Centre for Mushroom Research and Innovation, SKUAST-Jammu, delivered a lecture on "Mushroom Culti-vation for Entrepre-neurship". He highlighted the fundamentals of mushroom cultivation, its scope as a livelihood opportunity and the potential for developing small-scale entrepreneurial ventures.
The second lecture was delivered by Dr Moni Gupta, Professor and Head, Division of Biochemistry, SKUAST-Jammu, on "Nutraceutical and Medicinal Properties of Mushrooms". She explained the nutritional value of mushrooms and their bioactive and medicinal properties, besides highlighting their growing significance as nutraceutical foods. Around 80 students from the Department of Botany participated in the programme. An interactive session followed the lectures, during which the resource persons guided students on entrepreneurship and start-up opportunities, funding and financial support schemes, and government assistance available for launching innovative ventures.
