J&K filmmakers bag three awards at first international film festival

SRINAGAR, Sep 12: Filmmakers from Jammu and Kashmir made a strong showing at the first International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026, winning three of the nine awards presented at the inaugural event.
Baba Tasaduq Hussain won the Best Cinemato-graphy Award for his documentary "Naqsh-e-Daur (The Story of Ghulam Nabi Dhar)", which was recognised for its visual storytelling and cinematic treatment.
The Best Emerging Filmmaker Award was presented to Ajit Singh Bhasin for "Askini: The Guiding Darkness", recognising his distinctive cinematic approach.
Filmmaker Kapil Mattoo's "Tasrufdar - The Jinns of Kashmir" won the Best Film from Jammu and Kashmir Select category.
Other J&K films screened during the festival included "Batt Koch (The Lost Lane)", directed by Siddarth Koul and Ankit Wali, and "Love in Vietnam", by J&K-based filmmaker Rahat Shah Kazmi.
"Batt Koch", which was screened as the closing film, received appreciation from filmmaker Ramesh Sippy and the audience, according to the organisers.
The awards recognised talent across cinematography, emerging filmmaking and film production and highlighted the growing presence of filmmakers from the Union Territory on national and international platforms.
The inaugural festival brought together filmmakers, artists, technicians, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts from India and abroad, providing local filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience.
The films by J&K filmmakers explored themes linked to the region's history, culture, folklore, landscapes and contemporary realities.
The festival was organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) and provided a platform for local storytellers to connect with audiences and industry professionals from across the country and abroad.
