Uproar in J&K Assembly as BJP protests power tariff hike, workers’ issues

Srinagar, Sep 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed noisy scenes on Monday as BJP legislators staged a protest inside the House over the recent power tariff hike, demands of National Health Mission (NHM) employees and regularisation of daily wagers, as the autumn session began.
The BJP MLAs staged a sit-in in front of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather and raised slogans over the issues, seeking action on the demands of NHM employees and opposing the electricity tariff increase.
The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved an average 6.83 per cent increase in electricity tariffs in Jammu and Kashmir, with the revised rates coming into effect from September 1.
Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said the session provided an opportunity to raise issues concerning the people and expressed hope that the proceedings would focus on public welfare.
The seven-day session, scheduled from September 21 to 30, is expected to take up issues including employment, reservation, regularisation of workers, power tariffs and other public concerns.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party leaders held a protest outside the Civil Secretariat over various issues, including the reservation policy. Some protesters were detained by police, according to reports.
Apni Party leader Mohammad Ashraf Mir sought publication of the report on the reservation policy and said the issue particularly affected students in the open merit category.
PDP MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi said his party would raise issues concerning reservation, NHM employees and students in the Assembly.
JKNC MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan said his party would raise issues relating to basic public services, including water and electricity, besides the demand for restoration of statehood.
In another development, the Assembly broke with the earlier practice of adjourning after obituary references. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather proceeded with Question Hour after the House observed a two-minute silence in memory of former MLAs Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Dharam Paul and Ghulam Hassan Khan.
Rather read out the contributions and achievements of the three former legislators before the House proceeded with regular business.
