Congress stages protest, seeks transparency in electoral roll revision

JAMMU, Sep 28: The District Congress Committee Jammu Urban, led by its president and former minister Yogesh Sawhney, and the District Congress Committee Jammu Rural, headed by Neeraj Kundan, staged a protest at Shaheedi Chowk and marched towards the Deputy Commissioner's office, raising concerns over electoral roll revision and allegations of "Vote Chori".
The demonstration was held under the leadership of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Raman Bhalla and former minister Mula Ram. Congress workers carried placards and raised slogans seeking greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
Addressing the media, Bhalla said the Election Commission of India has a constitutional responsibility to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure public confidence in elections. He said allegations relating to electoral rolls and election procedures should be examined through appropriate institutional mechanisms.
Bhalla said voters have a legitimate interest in ensuring that electoral rolls are accurate, eligible citizens are able to exercise their franchise and complaints relating to the electoral process are dealt with through transparent procedures.
The Election Commission has described electoral roll integrity as fundamental to free and fair elections and has stated that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is intended to verify electoral rolls and ensure inclusion of eligible citizens. Its voter services portal provides facilities for checking electoral rolls and filing claims, objections and applications concerning voter registration and corrections.
Sawhney demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what he described as serious concerns regarding electoral integrity. He referred to allegations raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and sought answers from the Election Commission regarding the concerns being raised by the opposition.
Sawhney also called for action in connection with the allegations and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, holding the Union government politically responsible for what he described as concerns surrounding the electoral process.
