A moment of grace and self-realisation

Reflections on the teachings and presence of Hazoor Jasdeep Singh Gill Ji

Dera Baba Jaimal Singh at Beas has, for more than a century, remained associated with the spiritual tradition of Sant Mat, carrying forward the message of self-realisation, devotion, meditation, humility and service to humanity. Its teachings have inspired generations of people from different walks of life to look within themselves and lead lives guided by compassion, discipline, simplicity and spiritual awareness.
It was against this spiritual backdrop that the sangat in Jammu was blessed with the unexpected visit of Hazoor Jasdeep Singh Gill Ji, who arrived at the Satsang Centre at Thandi Khui on an unscheduled visit.
Hazoor Ji arrived by helicopter at around 11 a.m., and the news of his arrival quickly spread among devotees. People from Jammu and adjoining areas gathered in large numbers to have Darshan and listen to his words. The entire Satsang Centre was soon filled with devotees, reflecting the deep affection and reverence with which Hazoor Ji is regarded.
The Satsang programme included a question-and-answer session followed by Car Darshan. Throughout the programme, the atmosphere remained peaceful, devotional and disciplined. The large gathering was managed with remarkable order and serenity by the dedicated sevadars.
Among those present were Senior Advocate Aseem Sawhney, my wife, Mr Amit Sawhney, Editor-in-Chief of a Daily English newspaper, Sheetal Sawhney with her mother, and my granddaughter Aavisha Sawhney.
For all of us, the occasion was already deeply meaningful because of the opportunity to have Darshan of Hazoor Ji. However, what followed afterwards transformed the day into a particularly cherished personal experience.
After the Satsang programme concluded, Aseem Ji received an unexpected message that a brief meeting with Hazoor Ji had been arranged for our family. The invitation came as a moment of immense happiness and gratitude. We proceeded without delay, knowing that Hazoor Ji's schedule was extremely tight and that his helicopter was ready for departure.
We were fortunate to reach the place where Hazoor Ji was meeting us. A brief family interaction took place around the dining table. Despite the limited time available to Hazoor Ji, the warmth and simplicity of the interaction made the meeting deeply memorable.
Hazoor Ji subsequently came out along with Aseem Ji and kindly introduced himself to those present. I was particularly fortunate to have a brief personal conversation with him. Those few moments, though short, will remain permanently etched in my memory.
There are certain moments in life that cannot be adequately expressed through words. A meeting may last only a few minutes, a conversation may consist of only a few sentences, yet the impression it leaves on the heart can remain for years. For me, this was one such moment.
What made the experience particularly special was the contrast between the enormous gathering of devotees at the Satsang Centre and the quiet simplicity of those few personal moments. After witnessing thousands of devotees gathered for Darshan, being able to spend a brief period in a more personal setting felt especially meaningful.
Hazoor Ji's visit itself was an occasion of spiritual significance for the devotees of Jammu. His presence brought together people in an atmosphere marked by faith, devotion, discipline and inner reflection. For those who attended the Satsang, the opportunity to listen to him, participate in the programme and have Darshan became a cherished experience.
For our family, the unexpected opportunity to meet Hazoor Ji personally added another dimension to an already memorable day. The meeting was brief, but its emotional and spiritual significance will remain with us for a long time.
Soon thereafter, Hazoor Ji proceeded towards the helicopter. As he prepared to depart, we stood with deep respect and gratitude. We waved goodbye as the helicopter took off. His reciprocal gesture made those final moments especially warm and memorable.
As the helicopter gradually disappeared from sight, a profound sense of gratitude remained with us. The day had given us something far more valuable than an ordinary meeting - it had given us a memory that will be cherished for years.
I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to witness Hazoor Jasdeep Singh Gill Ji's visit to Jammu and, more particularly, for the unexpected privilege of sharing a few personal moments with him.
In a life filled with responsibilities, professional engagements and the routine demands of everyday existence, moments of stillness and spiritual connection are rare. Such moments remind us of the importance of humility, gratitude, compassion and looking within ourselves.
For me personally, the brief conversation with Hazoor Ji and those quiet moments of Darshan will remain unforgettable.
Hazoor Ji's visit to Jammu was not merely an occasion attended by a large gathering. For countless devotees, it was an opportunity for faith, devotion and inner reflection. For our family, it became an especially precious memory - one that we shall remember with humility, affection and gratitude for years to come.
